ANN ARBOR – Lenovo has invested six-figures into what the University of Michigan is calling the Lenovo+HealthDesignBy.Us Innovation Co+Lab to tap the minds of undergraduate and graduate students to develop practical uses of Augmented and Virtual Reality technology.

An information program kicks off Jan. 27 in a series of Ignite presentations featuring projects focused on health, design, and technology from the local and University community, followed by a workshop focused on VR and AR.  Patients and caregivers from C.S. Mott’s Children’s Hospital, as well as students, staff, faculty and the public are invited to attend.

Key Goals of the Event:
–  To learn about University and community-based projects focused on health, design,
and technology
–  To learn about the new Lenovo + HealthDesignBy.Us Innovation Co+Lab
–  To participate in an interactive virtual reality/augmented reality workshop
–  To be inspired to tackle an innovation project to be eligble for a summer fellowship or internship to work on that project with the Co+Lab and Lenovo

“It’s the next step in our entrepreneurship program,” said Nancy Benovich-Gilby, the U-M’s Enhrenberg Director of Entrepreneurship at the School of Information.  “All these students are doing projects. Now we’re putting together services where students offering their skills as consultants for free.”

Benovich-Gilby said Lenovo wanted to set up an innovation lab at U-M. The company wanted student, faculty and staff involvement so people could use Lenovo’s technology in creative ways and learn how well both Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality works in exciting new products and services. The focus has initially been put on the health sector. This new collaboration will include young patents at the Mott’s Children’s Hospital bringing services to their bedsides.

The project will use the Phab 2 Pro With Tango, a new technology from Google that enables AR gaming and utilities. All the users has to do is look through the Phab 2 Pro, and see objects and information overlaid onto the real world.
