DETROIT – Detroit ranks 9th in a list of 26 major US markets for startups moving into the metropolitan area in the past year, a new survey shows.

What’s more, Detroit CIOs reported the top three impacts startup and business growth has had on the city:

  1. The Detroit area has become more innovative (87 percent)
  2. Greater hiring of IT professionals in the Detroit area (76 percent)
  3. Increased ability to hire full-time due to more candidates in the area (71 percent)

The other cities on the Top 10 list as surveyed by Robert Half Technology are in order:

  1. New York
  2. Charlotte
  3. San Francisco
  4. Atlanta
  5. Washington, D.C.
  6. San Diego
  7. Seattle
  8. Cleveland
  9. Detroit
  10. Phoenix

The impact of startup growth to a city is palpable, and the ability to attract new talent is a leading asset. CIOs were asked: “Of the following, which would you say is happening as a result of startup and business growth in your city/area?”* Their responses:

  1. More technology candidates entering the job market: 83 percent
  2. The city/area has become more innovative: 82 percent
  3. Greater hiring of IT professionals in the city/area: 80 percent
  4. Increased ability to hire full-time due to more candidates in the area: 77 percent
  5. Decreased ability to hire due to competition/not being able to keep competitive with salaries: 41 percent

“Startup growth and expanding opportunities for technology professionals go hand-in-hand, and it’s encouraging to see it happening in many areas across the country,” said Jeff Weber, executive director for Robert Half Technology.

“Entrepreneurs want to be where there is access to talent, but they must also have strong infrastructure support, network partners and backing from the community. Similarly, tech workers want to be where the most innovative organizations are, but they also seek cities that are highly livable and have much to offer outside the office.”

Survey Methodology

The survey of more than 2,600 CIOs in 26 metropolitan areas in the United States was developed by Robert Half Technology and conducted by an independent research company.
