DETROIT – Rocket Fiber and Verizon Wireless announced Thursday they are testing a new Wi-Fi system in the Ford Field main bowl that they say will quadruple user capacity.

Rocket Fiber, a Detroit-based high-speed internet provider, equipped the stadium with 10-gig internet bandwidth that will allow more users to fully use social media platforms like Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter, the companies said in a press release.

Verizon Wireless said it has installed 120 Cisco Aironet 3800 Series Access Points into the stadium’s main bowl. More routers will be installed throughout the stadium in time for the 2017 NFL season, providing free internet service for up to 65,000 concurrent users.

The companies declined to disclose the cost of the project.

Rocket Fiber offers fiber-optic internet lines. The company launched an ultrafast fiber option in late 2015, which is available in Detroit’s downtown, Midtown, Brush Park and New Center areas. Rocket Fiber also signed a contract with Cobo Center to boost its internet bandwidth to 10 gigs.
