In just the past two weeks, AI company employees have urged governments to slow development long enough to build stronger safety protections. At the same time, businesses that once dismissed AI as overhyped are rapidly adopting it as productivity gains become harder to ignore. Meanwhile, billions of dollars continue pouring into AI data centers, chips and computing infrastructure—including the massive Oracle data center planned for Saline Township.
Taken together, those developments suggest AI has entered a new phase, one that could reshape Michigan’s economy, workforce and competitive position for decades.
Altman: AI Is Beginning To Accelerate Itself
In a blog post discussed this week by ABC News, Altman argued the industry has quietly crossed an important threshold.
Rather than viewing AI as simply another software tool, he believes modern AI systems are beginning to help researchers write code, solve technical problems and improve future AI models—creating a cycle where technological progress itself accelerates.
“The takeoff has started,” Altman wrote, arguing that society is already living through the early stages of this transformation.
Many AI researchers caution that true technological singularity—a point where artificial intelligence recursively improves itself beyond human understanding—has not yet been reached. But few dispute that AI capabilities have advanced dramatically over the past two years, particularly in software development, scientific research and business productivity.
