LANSING – Michigan drivers are one step closer to being able to use electronic proofs of registration during traffic stops following Michigan Senate action Thursday.

The bill, HB 4013, passed the chamber by a 38-0 vote and heads to Governor Rick Snyder‘s desk.

The bill would allow motorists to show an electronic copy or digital picture of a registration certificate when stopped by law enforcement.

Rep. Peter Lucido (R-Shelby Township), sponsor of the bill, said in a release following Senate passage that the technology is there to use electronic forms and it was a step by the state to join the 21st Century.

“Technology is everywhere. It is about time people had the option of having paper or electronic proof of registration. Furthermore, this legislation will not cost the Michigan taxpayers anything,” Lucido said.
