ROYAL OAK – Cyber bad guys are playing havoc with the Internet including an attack on Cyber Monday in Germany. Hackers drove about 900,000 Deutsche Telekom customers off the Internet impacting Holiday sales. In October, hackers also launched a Distributed Denial of Service attack targeted at the Domain Name System (DNS) that makes sure information requests on the internet are delivered to the right address, a lot of normal activities such as online shopping, social media interaction, and listening to music, were not possible for periods of time. The length of disruptions varied, but in some cases it was several hours.

Mark Becker, Partner at C/D/H, talks about how both attacks were pulled off. The U.S. cyber attack, interestingly enough, was engineered by harnessing the power of unprotected Internet of Things devices – such as smart thermostats, Digital video recorders and even smart kitch appliances – demonstrating both the dark side of IoT, but also the technical prowess of international hackers.
