MISBDC Director Brophy Resigns To Return To Private Health Tech

GRAND RAPIDS – Keith Brophy, who had served as State Director of the Michigan Small Business Development Center for the past three years has resigned to return to the private sector to pursue health tech. His resignation was effective March 8.

Ed Garner, the West Michigan SBDC Regional Director, has assumed the role of Interim Director during the transitional period.

“I’ve had the honor of serving as State Director of a great team that provides no-cost guidance to small business all across the state,” Brophy said in a LinkedIn post. ”The impact of this dedicated team is remarkable – counseling 5,780 businesses last year, including 2,500 startup stage entities, assisting with over  $190 million of capital formation,  and helping with the full launch of 415 new businesses.

“Thank you, Michigan SBDC team, for the incredible work you do, and all the lives you touch (including mine, when I first crossed paths with the SBDC as a start-up entrepreneur, 20 years ago),” Brophy wrote.

Garner, in a statement, said he was honored to serve as interim state director.

“Along with a solid foundation in our core, growth, and tech teams, there continues to be forward momentum with our special initiatives such as cyber security awareness and economic inclusion,” Garner said. “The Michigan SBDC will continue to provide strong, statewide support to entrepreneurs and small business owners.”

Hanna Burmeister, Michigan SBDC Marketing Manager, said a national search has begun for Brophy’s permanent replacement.

The Michigan Small Business Development Center provides no-cost consulting, business education, information-based planning and technology commercialization services to Michigan’s new business ventures, existing small businesses, growing businesses and innovators.
