KALAMAZOO – Sandra Cochrane, Chief Operating Officer for the Southwet Michigan Innovation Center, will moderate a panel on Tax-Exempt Incubators at the upcoming National Business Incubation Association International Conference on Business Incubation May 15-18 in Baltimore.
The round-table discussion will center around the types of tax relief that incubators have successfully achieved and will provide incubator managers with options for approaching local government to request tax relief. Cochrane?s panel is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. Monday May 16.
The Southwest Michigan Innovation Center (SMIC) was granted tax exemption status by the City of Kalamazoo in December of 2004. The approval came with a requirement for wage standards and a clawback provision for companies that located outside the city upon graduation. The tax exemption is intended to give tenants long-term stability and to make the SMIC more competitive with other biotechnology parks in the Midwest. The SMIC is currently at more than 90% capacity ? making its occupancy rate nearly four years ahead of initial projections.
