GRAND RAPIDS – Michigan Sustainable Business Forum will host a webinar Dec. 2 at 1 pm highlighting the intersection of climate action and materials management, detailing the climate strategy of one of the state’s leading waste management firms.

In 2020, Republic Services became the first U.S. recycling and solid waste services provider to have its emissions reduction target approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), ambitious sustainability goals designed to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 35 percent by 2030 and establish it as a climate leader in the industry.

Kristen Steiner, Director of Sustainability for Republic Services, will detail the Phoenix-based company’s climate plan and what it means for businesses and institutions in Michigan and the Great Lakes. She will discuss the role of the circular economy in climate action, fleet electrification, landfill emission reduction, methane capture and destruction, and related issues.

Kristin was appointed Director of Sustainability in April 2021. Prior to that role she was General Manager for Republic Services of Central Oregon after completing the GM Accelerated Program. As GM, she was responsible for 150 employees, a fleet of over 100 vehicles and equipment, and a $30M P&L. The Central Oregon business unit is a diverse business consisting of three collection divisions, two public recycling drop-off centers, a dump-and-bale recycling facility, a compost facility, a document destruction business, and a portables & septic pumping business.
