LANSING – Michigan public health officials on Saturday reported a fifth death of a resident with the coronavirus, with 238 positive tests statewide.

Detroit alone reported 99 new cases, bringing the city’s total to 248, nearly a third of the state’s 787 total infections.

Four of the deaths were in Wayne County, with three in Detroit. The fifth was Friday in Oakland County.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered wide-ranging restrictions on people and business in an effort to slow the spread of the virus.

Oakland County officials on Saturday said 42 of their 229 cases have been hospitalized with a number of them in critical condition.

Seven counties reported their first cases Saturday, most in west and central Michigan: Clinton, Berrien, Barry, Calhoun and Tuscola counties. Wexford and Clare in the northern lower peninsula also reported their first cases.
