Could Escobar’s Inside-The-Park Home Run Have Been Avoided?

EAST LANSING - Supported Intelligence unveiled SmartPitcher, a data-driven pitch selection model, during game one of the 2015 World Series Tuesday night. Mets pitcher Matt Harvey threw a fastball low and in to Royals leadoff hitter Alcides Escobar to begin the bottom of the 1st. A good choice - but not the best, says SmartPitcher.

Introduction to Android Development – Part 2

photoMobile Monday Ann Arbor

Get ready to dig into the code in this second of a two-part workshop oriented series focused on introducing developers to Android development!

Special thanks to Arbormoon for providing space for this event!

Starts at 6:30pm.

Format:
Part 1 – Monday, Nov 2  - We will give you an intro to Android at a high level.  What is ndroid?  What is the current state of Android?  Why does Android have such a sweet tooth for desserts?  These and many other questions will be discussed and answered.  We will also help you get set up in your development environments, if you haven't already done that.  Be sure to bring your laptop loaded with the latest version of Android Studio, as the wifi can't handle everyone downloading it at the same time!

In Between Sessions – This is where most of the learning will occur!  This is a self paced course provided for FREE from Udacity, but you’ll need to get through it before the December meeting to get the most out of it.  This is the course we’ll be referencing (again, its free!):

https://www.udacity.c...

Part 2 – Monday, Dec 7 (this session!)  – We will review the course material covered in the “homework”.  And then with any time left, we can play some more in Android Studio and the volunteers will answer as many questions as they can answer.

Questions:

Should I bring my laptop?

Yes!  You could get by without it, but this will help us answer any questions you have directly in the code.  This is intended to be a hands-on workshop oriented event.

What version of Android Studio should I have installed?

Whatever is considered the production version of Android Studio.  Currently the latest, non-beta version of Android Studio is 1.4.  That may change by the first meeting or in between meetings.  So stay tuned for that.  But in general, we will likely be using Android Studio 1.4.

What about Eclipse?

Sorry, Google is no longer supporting Eclipse, so we we aren't either.  There will be quite a few people at the event with experience with Eclipse that you can ask questions too, but we won't be covering it officially during the talks.

Prerequisites and Requirements (for the Udacity Course)

If you are new to programming and don’t know where to start, then this is the course for you!

If you have at least 1 year of programming experience in Java or another object-oriented programming language (for example: C++, Objective C or Python), you may want to check out the next course in this series (but we won't be covering it in class):
