ANN ARBOR ? It?s official. Jan Garfinkle of Arboretum Venture Capital is the new president of the Michigan Venture Capital Association. Garfinkle has been running the private equity finance group since last summer, when former president Mitch Mondry from the MGroup turned the day-to-day duties over to Garfinkle so could spend more time on his real estate development business.
The announcement came during the MVCA?s annual meeting at the Sheraton Four Points in Ann Arbor Thursday night, which also presented three awards to Michigan entrepreneurs.
Named Entrepreneurs of the Year were Ray Schiavone, the former CEO of Arbortext, who sold the company last summer for $190 million to PTC; and Randal Charlton of Asterand, for doing a reverse merger in 2005 with a company based in his native United Kingdom.
The MVCA?s first Lifetime Achievement Award went to Ted Doan, chairman of Doan Ventures, one of the original Venture Capitalists in Michigan and a director of Dow Chemical.
Other MVCA board members elected Thursday include:
Mary Campbell of EDF Ventures who was named the new Treasurer, replacing outgoing Treasurer Jason Burr of
Mike Bernard of Dykema Gossett remains Secretary;
Four new directors also were elected to terms that run through 2008. They include:
Tom Kinnear of Zell Lurie Institute at the University of Michigan;
Pat Morand, director of the New Life Sciences Fund at Southwest Michigan First;
Ron Reed of Endurance Ventures in Ann Arbor;
Bryant Zanko of Stryker Corp. in Kalamazoo;
John McIIwraith of Cincinnati Ohio Blue Chip Ventures.
