LANSING ? Michigan residents will be able to check the condition of state-owned bridges they might cross on a new web site launched Friday by the Department of Transportation.
The new site explains the federal bridge rating system and provides the most recent inspection report for each of the 4,402 state highway bridges.
“This online information is a snapshot of the ongoing bridge maintenance and inspection work we do every day to ensure the safest possible travel experience for Michigan motorists,” said MDOT Director Kirk Steudle.
Bridge listings are provided by county and by highway route number. They include the location of the bridge, the year it was originally constructed and the most recent reconstruction as well as it last inspection date and ratings.
The site also provides a link to the department’s five-year plan, which lists which bridges are planned for repair or replacement in that period.
The site does not cover the Ambassador Bridge, which is privately owned, or the Blue Water, Mackinac, and International bridges, which are all operated by authorities and inspected annually. Federal law requires only biennial inspections.
