Illinois Passes Michigan As Top State To Trade With Canada

LANSING – Trade with Canada increased in July over the prior July, but not enough to keep Michigan ahead of Illinois, the U.S. Department of Transportation said in a report released Thursday.

Michigan had $4.56 billion in trade with Canada in July, a 0.7 percent increase from July 2011. But Illinois had $4.89 billion in trade, a 9.3 percent increase over the same period, the report said.

California, though seeing a 29 percent increase, remained a distant third at $2.86 billion.

The state’s Canadian trade was also down from $6.54 billion that crossed the border in June.

Michigan did maintain its third place standing in trade with Mexico at $3.9 billion, a 17.8 percent increase from the prior July. The state remained behind Texas ($11.99 billion) and California ($4.55 billion).

Mexican trade was also down from June’s $4.17 billion.
