LANSING – Michigan has the fifth-worst business climate in the nation, at least in terms of the perception of 556 CEOs who participated in the annual Chief Executive magazine survey ranking the states’ business climates.
The survey is not based on metrics, but the general perception participating CEOs have of each state’s business climate. The magazine asked them to pick the top four and bottom four states with points assigned to each state based on the ranking, and the list of 50 states was made based off those point totals.
Texas had the best climate while California had the worst. Both states have held down those respective slots for several years in the survey.
Joining Texas at the top of the list is North Carolina, Florida, Tennessee and Georgia. Surprisingly, Indiana was ranked as the sixth best.
Joining Michigan in the bottom five was New Jersey (47), Illinois (48), Illinois (49) and California (50).
