DETROIT – Canada?s Detroit based Consul General Rocco Delvecchio hosted earlier this summer at his Grosse Pointe residence the first ever Canada/US cross-border Angels investment meeting, what the Canadian government hopes will encourage U.S. investors to finance Canadian start ups.

The invitation-only networking dinner meeting was co hosted by Great Lakes Angels, whose membership includes high net worth individuals in Ontario. Thirty eight attendees included Canadian Angel investors from Toronto, London, and Windsor. US Angels from Ohio, Michigan and Illinois attended. Presentations were made by three companies seeking expansion capital (two Canadian and one Michigan business). The Consulate also arranged for a Canadian lawyer and a Chartered Accountant to make a joint presentation on cross-border investing.

US Angel Capital Association, the national umbrella of angels associations confirmed to GLA President David Weaver that no similar cross border event had ever previously been organized. The Canadian Consulate hopes this is the first of what could become regular events that would showcase Canadian entrepreneurs to U.S. investors.

?We think this is an important group and represents an entirely new area for our office to get to know better,?? said Douglas Bingeman, Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner Canadian Consulate General. ?The opportunities for projects on both sides of the border are of interest to us and we welcome the way the Great Lakes Angels were willing to work with us. I highly recommend anyone interested in learning more about Great Lakes Angels to contact David Weaver directly.
