“It’s the third year we?ve done this,” said founder Lisa Diggs. “We started asking for suggestions in August and received more than 1000. We looked for a variety of price points and where the companies were located, the uniqueness of the product they suggested. My hope is people will not only buy the products from our gift guide, but also learn more about these Michigan companies.
“We’re trying to motivate people to look at where their dollars are going this Holiday season,” she said. “It’s all about revitalizing the economy and changing the image of the state from dependent upon one industry to showing we have so many other things to offer.”
Diggs said she?s been paying for 95 percent of the costs of producing the site, so it’s become a labor of love, rather than a way to make a lot of money. But now she’s revamping the site and will be adding more advertising and sponsorship opportunities in 2010.
She gets about 3000 unique visitors monthly, most to view the Michigan Blue Pages, a directory of online businesses. Searches are not only for consumer goods, but also for businesses looking to buy from other businesses.
“You feel you ought to know about this company in Kalamazoo doing this, even though you’re in Alpena, because you could be doing business together,” she said. “If there is a product you love, and we don’t make it or grow it in Michigan, you’re not going to find it at BuyMichiganNow.Com.
