GRAND RAPIDS—Swabs from a women’s health company have been recommended by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for use in testing for COVID-19 infections.

NxGen MDx LLC iw a women’s health company providing genetic testing. The company said it had validated its testing using endocervical swabs, used in cervical examinations, which are in plentiful supply, rather than nasopharyngeal swabs, which are in short supply.

The company says it has the ability to test 7,000 samples a week with a 48-hour turnaround.

According to MDHHS, capacity for COVID-19 testing will need to triple or quadruple in Michigan in order to protect public health. Especially with the recent expansion in test priority criteria, maximizing the use of all available testing capacity is crucial.

NxGen MDx employs rapid molecular diagnostics for infectious disease and genetic screening technology that examines the entire gene rather than parts of the gene, giving women and families a comprehensive assessment of their health.
