GRAND RAPIDS – AT&T plans to launch ultra-fast 1 gigabit internet service in parts of the western Michigan area, starting with parts of Grand Rapids, on a 100 percent fiber network to homes, apartments and small business locations.

AT&T already launched its ultra-fast internet service in parts of 52 of the nation’s largest metro areas. The company plans to reach at least 75 metros with its fastest internet service. AT&T has connected its fiber network to more than 4.6 million locations nationwide. In 2017, the company plans to add two million locations, and at least 12.5 million locations by mid-2019.

“We are proud to add western Michigan to our list of metros where we plan to bring our fastest internet speed plans available,” said Jim Murray, president, AT&T Michigan. “AT&T Fiber enables access to enriched experiences as our customers increasingly interact with their world in more data-intensive ways. At AT&T, we are committed to innovation and providing cutting-edge technologies that enhance the many ways our customers live, work and play.”

“High-speed internet can open new doors for the citizens of Grand Rapids and surrounding communities, which can positively impact many aspects of life such as education, economic opportunities, communication and everyday enjoyment,” said Sen. Dave Hildenbrand (R-Lowell). “We celebrate the plans to bring ultra-fast AT&T internet to our area and look forward to the new possibilities this technology brings.”

Four years ago, we announced our intent to build a one gigabit fiber network, beginning in Austin, Texas. Today, we have the largest fiber network within our 21-state footprint.

With one gigabit service, a customer can download 25 songs in one second or a 90-minute HD movie in less than 34 seconds.
