Registration Open For NHacks School Hack-a-Thon At Flextech Academy

NOVI – Registration has opened for the Third Annual NHacks High School Hack-a-thon in May at the Flextech Academy in Novi that is designed to expose students to the power of computer science and programming.

The Hack-a-thon, on Saturday May 19 from 8 to 11:30 am, are 12 – 48-hour coding marathons for developers to collaborate and innovate in a competition for prizes. In the case of NHacks, will involve groups of students in creating projects from iOS and Android mobile applications to websites to Virtual and Augmented Reality projects.

The NHacks effort began in 2016 when two Novi High School sophomores, Ronit Tiwary and Min Jae (Max) You, decided to launch a Michigan high school-focused hack-a-thon event. Each event to-date has drawn 100+ attendees, increasing annually.

NHacks is at the forefront of a movement in hack-a-thons targeting high schools students rather than the usual college students and professionals. This year, NHacks is also planning to host a 2-hour coding workshop for middle school students in order to further catalyze interest in computer science for younger students. The event will also feature a keynote address from Thomas Finholt, Dean of the University of Michigan School of Information.

University of Michigan students and corporate professionals will serve as mentors to assist the participating students, as well as to conduct workshops in areas such as iOS development, Android development, web development and more.

Prizes this year will include: Xbox One’s, drones, Google Home Mini’s and Apple Airpods.

2018 event sponsors include:  Flextech High School, Linode, UD Mercy, Microsoft Philanthropies/TEALS, Denso, Mobile Technology Association of Michigan (MTAM), MI STEM Partnership, Tome, Stickeryou, .Tech Domains, Twilio, Hasura, Big Nerd Ranch, GoGo Squeez, Sketch, Indico, Desmos, Balsamiq, the Michigan Sports Analytics Society and Soylent.

Middle school and high school students seeking to participate can find details and registration information at http://NHacks.org.
