ROYAL OAK – On Memorial Day weekend the new 4D Toyota Engineering Theater opens at the Michigan Science Center. Studio Zone, a Detroit company, helped with the design and build out of the space. 4D provides a completely immersive experience from chairs, to air, to sound, to, well just about everything, says Tonya Matthews, PhD, the CEO of the Michigan Science Center. The official opening is May 27.

The wall on the outside of the theater also will be interactive. It will explain the technology that makes this 4D experience possible and the career options for young people who could build these 4D products and services in the future. An added bonus is a special cut of the National Geographic’s Extreme Weather film will be offered during the theater launch.

Matthews’ goal is to get young people excited about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Another of Matthews’ STEM career development programs is called STEMinista – some 300 middle school girls from 4th through 8th grades who are introduced to female STEM role models, mentors, and special programs to build interest in STEM careers.

Matthews seeks to attract more women to fill the millions of tech jobs vacancies in the United States today.
