GRAND RAPIDS — US Signal, a provider of data center and other managed IT services, announced that it has started engineering and construction of its newest data center in Wayne County’s Van Buren Township.
The new center is planned for opening by Dec. 31, 2019, adding up to 100,000 square feet of additional data center space in greater Detroit.
Connected to US Signal’s robust, secure network, the new data center will be the fourth for the company in Michigan, with two additional data centers owned and operated in Grand Rapids and one in Southfield. The project was initiated to accommodate the growth of anchor customers and to support the region’s prospering business and technology communities.
US Signal said the new data center will provide organizations with a local option for colocation, disaster recovery and cloud hosting, which increases the available infrastructure that will assist in making Southeast Michigan an attractive location for expansion into the region.
US Signal also maintains SSAE 16-certified data centers in Oak Brook, Ill., Madison, Wis., Indianapolis, and South Bend, Ind. All are at least 200 miles apart and are on separate power grids to minimize the effects of natural disasters. Situated in areas with cooler weather for energy efficiency and protected from weather-related events, they are easily accessible from main transportation routes.
“As organizations develop hybrid cloud strategies in Michigan and across the United States, they often seek to alleviate the burden of owning and operating their own data center,” said Dave Wisz, executive vice president of operations at US Signal. “The new greater Detroit data center will increase US Signal’s data center availability and enable organizations throughout the region to take advantage of both geographic diversity and lower latency because of the adjacency between their office and their colocated equipment and cloud hosting services.”
In US Signal’s 2018 IT Resiliency Survey, respondents indicated that they are using backup, continuous data protection and disaster recovery technologies to create IT resiliency. The survey indicated that most respondents are utilizing third-party data center and cloud providers to manage the day-to-day operations of their IT infrastructure.
