SOUTHFIELD–The Engineering Society of Detroit is once again offering its preparatory courses for engineers planning to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Professional Engineer (PE) licensing examinations.

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying’s FE exam is the first examination required to become a professional licensed engineer (PE). The 110-question exam may be taken as early as the last year of an undergraduate engineering degree program. Many candidates take the FE exam right after graduation.

The NCEES The Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam tests for a minimum level of competency in a particular engineering discipline. It is designed for engineers who have gained a minimum of four years of post-college work experience in their chosen engineering discipline.

ESD offers licensing review courses as follows: FE in electrical and computer engineering; PE in civil, electrical and computer engineering, with concentrations in power and mechanical engineering; and a new FE/PE fast track course in civil and mechanical engineering.

The FE/PE fast track review course and the FE review course both begin Jan. 30. The PE review course begins Feb. 10.

Licensed engineers enjoy higher salaries and faster career advancement, and become qualified to work independently as a consultant or business owner. A PE license gives an engineer the ability to sign and seal contracts and drawings, and opens up career options like consulting or starting an engineering firm.

Since 1941, ESD has helped thousands of engineers prepare for their exam in a variety of disciplines. The ESD courses feature multiple expert instructors, teaching only their specialty, in a small group with live online instruction via Zoom.

Visit NCEES.org for state exam dates and registration information.

ESD is so confident in its classes that if students do not pass the state exam after taking the review course, students may attend the the review course a second time for free, except for a $50 materials fee.

ESD has open FE/PE information sessions on the second Tuesday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m., where students and engineers can learn more about the exams, NCEES resources, and ESD. Register online at www.esd.org/programs/pe-info/. For more about the courses overall, visit https://www.esd.org/programs/pe-overview/.

The FE review course is $1,100 for ESD members and $1,350 for nonmembers. The other courses are $1,350 for ESD members and $1,500 for nonmembers. Nonmembers can join ESD for the professional rate of $99 a year and pay the member rate for any course.

For more information on the courses, contact Elana Shelef at ESD, (248) 353-0735, ext. 119, or [email protected].
