NOVI – Organizers announced the launch of registration for the second annual NHacks High School Hack-a-thon June 17 at the Flextech Academy in Novi.

Hack-a-thons are 12 – 24 hour code marathons for developers to collaborate and innovate. In the case of nHacks, this event is designed to both expose students to the power of computer science and innovative thinking, but also to offer a venue to utilize this knowledge to develop projects that can range from Android and iOS mobile apps to Virtual Reality projects.

NHacks is at the forefront of a movement in hack-a-thons starting to reach out to high schools students rather than college students and professionals who are typically targeted for participation. The NHacks effort began in 2016 when two Novi High School sophomores, Ronit Tiwary and Min Jae (Max) You decided to launch a Michigan high school-focused hack-a-thon event. This first event had over 100 participants and mentors, and was featured on local newscasts.

One year later, Tiwary and You, along with Sponsorship Director, Jason Israilov, and Marketing Director, Eleanor Wang, are now leading a team of motivated high school students in producing a second event that they hope will build on the success of the 2016 event.

2017 sponsors include:  Nexcess, Kettering University, Linode, Soylent, FlexTech High School, .techDomains, Jet Brains, Mobile Technology Association of Michigan (MTAM), Michigan STEM Partnership, mPowered Entrepreneurship, MobiBootCamp, Hack Club, Dribble, Private Internet Access and Domino’s Pizza.

Mentors will be joining the event from various startups, universities and enterprise firms where they will work with student groups directly, as well as teach workshops on such topics as web, Android and iOS development and more.
