LANSING – Tuesday brought more than 5.1 million people to the polls, a record number of total voters in Michigan, and a 68 percent turnout, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land estimated Wednesday.
The county with the highest total percentage turnout was Ottawa, who voted at 79 percent, Kelly Chesney, spokeswoman for the Secretary of State said. Branch County had the lowest percentage turnout at 58 percent.
Chesney said there were no unusual issues on Election Day; occasionally equipment needed to be replaced and some ballots jammed in the machines.
“Nothing that kept us moving forward with the elections,” she said.
She credits engaged voters with high turnout, and called the election an ‘unprecedented success.’
The voter-turnout percentage was not broken. The record was set in 1960 with 73 percent of the state’s registered voters casting ballots.
