LANSING – Governor Rick Snyder is still making final decisions on a proposal to move ahead with a new bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, and will not make an announcement on his proposal until after the State of the State address on January 18, sources said on Thursday.

Coincidental to actions by a Detroit judge to jail Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel “Matty” Moroun, sources said Snyder is still reviewing options on how to proceed with action outside of what the Legislature might do.

Gongwer News Service previously reported that the governor would likely announce his decision on the bridge either about a week before or a week after the State of the State address. Ongoing discussions have meant the announcement will come afterward.

Those options and decisions include discussions with both the federal and Canadian governments, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The three key options Snyder is weighing to move ahead with construction are an intergovernmental agreement (most likely with Canada), conveying authority for New International Trade Crossing project to the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, or turning authority for the project over to the U.S. federal government.

There are other options on the table as well, the sources indicated, but one of those three is the most likely for Snyder to choose.
