LANSING – A report that 29 percent of small business owners plan to hire more workers in the next 12 months is great news for job seekers. The statistic is from the Small Business of Michigans latest quarterly Small Business Barometer survey of small businesses.
“Half of Michigan’s private sector workers are employed at small businesses, 99 percent of employer firms are small businesses and 60- 80-percent of net new jobs each year are created at small businesses,” said SBAM Vice President Communications Michael Rogers. “So, when a big chunk of small employers say they are going to be looking for workers, that’s a very positive development for people in the job market.”
The Barometer survey also found that 51 percent of small business owners gave a “positive” rating when asked about accessibility of qualified personnel. Only 14 percent give a “negative” rating.
“Employers know good workers are available and momentum for business expansion continues to build, so we feel the stage is being set for a small business job boom, he said. Even though Michigan’s economy continues to lag behind the rest of the nation, 59 percent of small businesses still expect sales to increase in the next 12 months and 39 percent expect profits to rise.
