LANSING – Michigan.Gov has a whole new look. A revamped homepage for the state went live over the weekend.

Redesigned after Department of Information Technology officials conducted focus groups with the general public and with the age group most connected to the Internet, young people (in this case, students at Michigan State University).

As a result, the new site has a cleaner, more compact feel. It is less crowded with links and options, though the links there are still take users to the different locales they need to access.

“That was the one thing the groups said, we needed more white space,” Kurt Weiss, spokesperson for DIT said.

Among the new features on the redesigned webpage is access to all the Facebook and Twitter pages various state departments and agencies maintain. The page also gets access to various state YouTube videos.

Preliminary final changes were made to the new page on June 12 and the state decided to simply go live with the page over the weekend without making an announcement. Weiss said that adjustments will be made to the page as suggestions and comments come in from the general public.

The state website averaged more than 52 million views a month so far during 2009, state officials said
