LANSING Through the federal Help America Vote Act, Michigan will receive $28 million to revamp the state’s voting systems, which will include optical scan technology as the states uniform voting system.
President Bush signed HAVA into law in 2002 and the federal government has committed $3.4 billion for states over the next three years. The federal funds will go towards 2006 mandated updates.
“These funds are critical to fulfilling the requirements of HAVA, namely ensuring the integrity of our elections process, increasing privacy and independence for voters with disabilities, and providing access for military voters stationed overseas,” Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land said in a statement.
