LANSING – The National Lieutenant Governors Association, in a resolution adopted Thursday, called on all of the Great Lakes states to adopt the Great Lakes Compact. The lieutenant governors also called on the three remaining presidential candidates to lay out their proposals for preserving the lakes.
The resolution, sponsored by Lt. Governor John Cherry, Wisconsin Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton, and Minnesota Lt. Governor Carol Molnau, was adopted unanimously by the association.
“This resolution sends two clear messages: State legislatures around the region – including our own here in Michigan – must ratify the Great Lakes Compact as soon as possible, and individuals who are interested in being our country’s next president must outline in detail what they plan to do to protect and preserve our Great Lakes,” said Mr. Cherry, current chair of the Great Lakes Commission. “Our country’s next president must make the Great Lakes a top priority – both today and tomorrow.”
Michigan is still in the process of adopting the compact, with negotiations continuing between the House and Senate over implementation language. Legislators in Wisconsin have urged changes to the compact. Minnesota, along with Illinois and New York, has already adopted the compact.
New York announced its adoption of the compact Friday with Lt. Governor David Paterson’s signing of the legislation.
