LANSING ? Michigan government workers have been told in a letter distributed by their department directors that if there is no agreement to resolve the state’s 2007-08 budget crisis on Thursday, the state will begin preparations on Friday for a shutdown of services.
“In the event a partial shutdown is necessary, details will be released on Friday, and you will be notified how this affects you,” the Gongwer News Service reported the letter said.
The letter also said, “It is our intention to continue the most vital services until a budget resolution is reached.”
Thursday is a critical day to reach an agreement, the letter said, because Friday will be the last day most state workers will be at work and informed of what will happen on Monday, when the 2007-2008 fiscal year begins.
Meanwhile, talks between Gov. Jennifer Granholm and top legislative leaders continue. Republicans are putting a greater emphasis on the need for Democrats to pass a continuation budget to avoid the shutdown.
