BETHESDA, Md. ? DSW Shoe Warehouse, which has 10 stores in Michigan, said last month?s theft of customer IDs was much worse than first reported. The company now says hackers grabbed the names and credit card numbers for 1.4 million customers ? 10 times more than the company?s first estimate.

Hackers also grabbed 96,000 checking account and driver?s license numbers. So nearly 1.5 million people who purchased shoes at DSW using a credit card, debit card or check have had their identity compromised, perhaps stolen.

DSW declined to name which of its 175 stores were affected. In Michigan, DSW operates stores in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Novi, Roseville, Southfield, Sterling Heights, Troy and West Bloomfield.

Company officials asked people to monitor their accounts. Anyone who discovers that their credit cards were used illegally should contact their credit card company immediately.

DSW said some people have already reported illegal activity on their accounts.

The company said their online store was not affected.

A company hotline has been set up for customers with questions. The number to call is (800) 314-0224.
