LANSING ? Gov. Jennifer Granholm wasted no time in signing legislation on Friday that officials hope will help boost the tourism industry by establishing the Michigan Promotion Program.
Granholm signed SB 1223 (PA 98), SB 1224 (PA 99), HB 5865 (PA 100), HB 5866 (PA 101) and HB 5867 (PA 102).
She called the package “the most aggressive marketing of Michigan we have ever seen. This unprecedented investment will allow us to promote our state in new markets and trumpet to a whole new audience what we already know: that Michigan is a great vacation destination and a great place to do business.”
The bills got final legislative approval this week. Under the measures, a $60 million fund will be established in the Michigan Strategic Fund to finance expanded marketing for the state. While some money will go for agricultural-related tourism, most will be aimed at tourism development and one-third will go for business attraction.
Money for the funds will come from redirecting some of the tobacco settlement monies.
