LANSING Granholm Administration officials and Michigan legislative leaders will likely next begin budget discussions on Monday, and at that time may decide if lawmakers will attempt to complete work on the budget next week.
The Legislature returns to session on August 25, for what most people expect will be an attempt to complete action on the 2004-05 budget. Several budget conference committees have already been scheduled for that day, even without decisions made yet on final budget numbers.
However, officials said Thursday there was a chance final action on the budget could wait until after Labor Day, this year on September 6. The Republican National Convention in New York City is scheduled to begin August 30, and several legislators are delegates to that meeting, so the Legislature will not meet that week.
While officials described themselves as very close to finishing the final details of the budget agreement, they are giving themselves a hedge on whether the budget can be completed next week.
No budget meetings took place this week as several top lawmakers were away.
