LANSING – An environmental group is targeting U.S. Rep. Justin Amash and U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers for their stances on changes to the federal Clean Air Act with billboards and radio ads that launched Monday.
The Environmental Defense Action Fund is running the campaign in six states against eight members of Congress including Amash (R-Kentwood) and Rogers (R-Brighton).
The radio spots feature Bob Sears, a pediatrician and co-author of “The Baby Book,” saying the proposed changes to the act would better protect children and asking voters in the districts to urge their representatives to support the change.
“We can’t tell our kids not to breathe, so we rely on our nation’s clean air laws to keep them safe. But now those protections are in danger,” Sears said in the ads. “Some in Congress want to overrule the doctors and scientists who are recommending that we lower the amount of toxic mercury, dioxin and acid gases in our air.”
The billboards feature a young boy wearing an oxygen mask and urge each targeted representative: “Don’t side with lobbyists to allow more mercury, dioxins and smog in our air.”
The group made a $300,000 buy among the eight districts, with the radio ads running two weeks and the billboard ads up four weeks.
The two representatives made no comment on the ads.
