GREENVILLE – Energy Conversion Devices is expected to announce on Wednesday it will build and open a new production facility in Greenville that could employ several hundred workers, a God send to a community hard hit by factory closures.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm is slated to be present for the announcement at 9:45 a.m. in Greenville.

The announcement comes just weeks after the Electrolux plant closed. Electrolux employed thousands in this city of 10,000 people about 40 miles north of Grand Rapids. For nearly a century, refrigerators were manufactured in the city by a variety of companies.

Energy Conversions pioneered the development of amorphous materials and has been a leader in manufacturing solar panels. The United Solar Ovonic subsidiary of the company is expected to be the company that will build and operate the plant.
