DETROIT The details were released Tuesday by AT&T Wireless on its plan to make Detroit and three other U.S. cities wireless Hot Spots. The AT&T Wireless GSM calling plans for unlimited voice service and streaming media display capabilities is $24.99 for consumers and $79.99 for businesses.
The footprint in the Detroit metropolitan area includes the city of Detroit, north to Pontiac, south to Taylor and east to Metro Airport roughly following the I-75 and I-696 expressways. AT&T also confirmed as reported Monday in Mitechnews.Com that the three other launch cities for its new G3 service are Seattle, San Francisco and Phoenix. By years end, San Diego and Dallas will be added.
We decided to come to Detroit because theres a lot happening here, said AT&T Wireless spokesman Rick Ellis. The spectrum here is built out and theres a lot of interest from businesses and consumers. Detroit has one of the highest penetration of cell phone use in the United States.
That statement is based on a New York-based Scarborough Research report done in 2003 that found 74 percent of households in the Detroit market have a cell phone, the second highest rate in the nation.
AT&T Wireless also said in a news conference that its wireless broadband service provides customers with average wireless data speeds between 220 and 320 kilobits-per-second (kbps), with bursts up to 384kbps.
For consumers, its unlimited mMode offers high-speed, premium steaming and downloadable video and audio entertainment services. Premium entertainment services provided by RealNetworks give mMode customers the ability to enjoy hours of informative content every day, including: ABC News, NPR News, CBS Marketwatch, FOX Sports, Sporting News Radio, The Weather Channel(R), as well as, prime time TV and soap opera recaps, movie reviews and trailers, horoscopes, book reviews and more.
Mobile professionals will be able to the use the modem or the handsets’ Bluetooth connectivity to wirelessly enable Internet and e-mail access using HP handhelds and notebook PCs. Customers using Microsoft’s Exchange Server 2003 with products in their work environment will receive a familiar and much-enhanced wireless connectivity solution for accessing their e-mail, contacts and calendar.
