DETROIT – A new report from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth estimates that Michigan has lost more than 26,000 manufacturing jobs since the first of the year, most with the states auto industry. But a series of recent announcements suggests that Detroit isn’t in any danger of losing its title of Motor City.

Only last week, BorgWarner, the $3.1 billion automotive supplier, broke ground for a new headquarters in Auburn Hills. The company is moving its headquarters from the loop in Chicago to suburban Detroit to be closer to its primary customers.

BorgWarner’s move, however, isn’t an isolated development. Akebono, the big Japanese brake supplier, has also decided to expand its North American headquarters and technical center outside Detroit after looking for other locations around the country. Moving away from Detroit would have been too disruptive, Akebono officials concluded.
