LANSING – Those supporting expansion of online charter schools launched an online campaign Friday to urge legislators, particularly Republicans who appear to be wavering on the issue, to vote for the bill allowing more of the schools.
The National Coalition for Public School Options Michigan Chapter launched the series of single-page websites that include letters to legislators from constituents whose children attend a cyberschool or feel their child would benefit from such a school. The group has been pushing some time for a vote on SB 619 in the House.
Examples of the sites include www.repgoikemeetmajestic.com about a 14-year-old student from Macomb who has a medical condition that would make her better suited to online learning than remaining in the classroom and www.repkurtzmeetbaylie.com about a 13-year-old with anxiety who is thriving in an online school.
In addition to Rep. Ken Goike (R-Ray Township) and Rep. Kenneth Kurtz (R-Coldwater), the campaign specifically targeted Rep. Cindy Denby (R-Fowlerville), Rep. Frank Foster (R-Pellston), Rep. Thomas Hooker (R-Byron Center), Rep. Ed McBroom (R-Vulcan), Rep. Rick Outman (R-Six Lakes), Rep. Bruce Rendon (R-Lake City) and Rep. Patrick Somerville (R-New Boston).
