LANSING – Lt. Governor Brian Calley said Monday that the Snyder administration will unveil its plan to overhaul the personal property tax in a “couple weeks,” the first indication as to how soon the plan will be announced.
Calley, speaking to the Michigan Sheriffs Association, continued the administration’s pre-emptive moves to calm worries in local government – which receives the bulk of the $1.2 billion annually raised by the tax on business equipment – that the changes will decimate their revenues.
He stressed that the administration’s plan will focus on relief for industrial personal property while changes to commercial and utility personal property would wait.
“Those won’t all carry the same priority and weight that we have in terms of fixing the system,” he said.
Calley also reiterated points made often by Governor Rick Snyder, that the changes will occur during a period of several years and will include replacement revenue.
“You take all of those factors and put them together, I hope that puts you somewhat at ease,” he said.
