LANSING – High-tech job opportunities are everywhere in Lansing these days. Of the nearly 60 companies participating in the Capital Area Michigan Works!’ No Worker Left Behind Job Expo in downtown Lansing March 18, more than a dozen are recruiting for high tech jobs.

Job seekers can connect from 2:30 to 6 p.m. at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, with openings for software programmers, IT analysts, Linux and Windows administrators, Java developers, technicians, customer support and engineers of all sorts. Hiring employers span multiple industries, from software companies to health care systems to insurance headquarters.

The Lansing region has seen a boom in IT employment recently, according to Chris Knapp, executive director of the Capital Area IT Council, an industry group focused on workforce issues. The greater Lansing region now boasts more than 300 IT companies, and information technology provides more than 9,000 jobs in the region.

According to “Growing IT: Opportunities for the Capital Area,” a study released by workforce development agency Capital Area Michigan Works! last year, IT jobs in the region pay 75 percent more than the average for all jobs. The industry has been reaching out to recent grads, in particular, hosting “Tech Tours” of local companies, housing and entertainment hot spots, as well as exhibiting at college career fairs throughout the Midwest. The job expo is just one more opportunity to connect with high tech candidates of all experience levels.
