LANSING – Julie Rogers, the Michigan Democratic candidate who lost to Rep. Jack Hoogendyk (R-Portage) by 473 votes on Tuesday, may be looking into a recount.
A spokesperson for Rogers said Thursday that they are asking their legal team to look into the options as the Kalamazoo County clerk is in the process of certifying the results.
Genna Nichols said the Rogers’ camp is “leaning” toward requesting a recount but no decision has been made yet.
“Every vote counts when (the outcome is) under 1 percent,” she said.
Technically, Hoogendyk took in 50.5 percent of the vote to Ms. Rogers’ 49.4 percent, but Nichols said there were inconsistencies in the vote tallies for Kalamazoo Township and they want that reviewed.
“Julie Rogers is not ready to concede,” she said. “We just want to ensure that the certified election results are fair and accurate.”
Hoogendyk said he hadn’t heard about his opponent wanting a recount and said it was hard to comment given the fact he didn’t know specifics of what inconsistencies the Rogers camp were claiming, but he did say, “This is America. This is something she has the right to do,” and that he wouldn’t impede that process.
