KALAMAZOO ? Medical devices will get a lot more money from the Michigan Technology Tri-Corridor Fund in 2006, a Michigan Economic Development Corp. executive said Tuesday at the MichBio Sprouts event.

John Shallman, Life Sciences Business Development Manager, said medical device start ups will get more focus than in year?s past when the awards are made next spring.

The Technology Tri-Corridor Fund, which awarded $27.3 million this year to 24 life sciences projects, will be looking to pump money into companies that have technology transferable to medical devices.

?When the new fiscal year starts, there will be big changes in the Tri-Corridor Fund,?? Shallman said.

The Michigan Technology Tri-Corridor Fund competition is a peer-reviewed process that includes researchers at Michigan public universities and entrepreneurs working to commercialize technology-based products that have potential to enhance and extend the lives of people throughout the world.

The program seeks to fund the best basic research, applied research and commercialization projects in Michigan and encourages collaboration between researchers and technology companies. Winning proposals in 2005 included technologies for treating aneurysms, a drug-infusion safety system, software tools for neuro-imaging in epilepsy and a real-time ultrasound for low-cost diagnosis of coronary artery disease.
