DETROIT — Cannabis dispensaries across the United States are facing a growing workforce challenge: retaining employees in a rapidly expanding but still evolving industry.

Many cannabis provisioning centers operate with large hourly workforces, including budtenders, retail managers and support staff. While the industry has created thousands of jobs, many smaller operators struggle to offer traditional health insurance benefits because of the high cost of employer-sponsored coverage.

A new preventive healthcare benefit program is aiming to address that gap by offering cannabis retailers a more affordable way to support employee health while improving retention.

The Genus Preventive Care Program, promoted by Genus Credit Services, focuses on providing workers access to preventive healthcare services designed to identify potential health issues early and encourage wellness monitoring.

Workforce Stability Becoming A Priority For Cannabis Retailers

Cannabis retail has become one of the fastest-growing segments of the legal marijuana industry. In Michigan alone, hundreds of licensed provisioning centers employ thousands of workers.

But the sector also faces high employee turnover, a challenge common across retail industries.

Industry operators say employee benefits are increasingly important as dispensaries compete for experienced workers who understand compliance requirements, product knowledge and customer service expectations.

“When businesses invest in employee wellbeing, they are more likely to retain experienced staff,” said Bill Shaw of Genus Credit Services, which is introducing the preventive care program to cannabis retailers.

Shaw said the program is designed to supplement traditional health coverage rather than replace it.

“Our goal is to give employers a way to offer preventive healthcare support without the high cost of full insurance plans,” Shaw said.

Preventive Care Focus

Preventive healthcare emphasizes routine screenings, wellness exams and diagnostic testing designed to detect health risks early.

Medical experts say early detection can help prevent minor health issues from developing into more serious and costly conditions.

For workers who lack consistent access to healthcare services, preventive screenings and monitoring may be delayed or skipped entirely.

Programs focused on preventive care aim to expand access to those services, particularly for workers in industries where employer-sponsored health insurance may not always be available.

Designed For Retail-Heavy Industries

The Genus program is being introduced first to cannabis provisioning centers, where employers are looking for new ways to strengthen workforce stability.

The program may also be applicable to other industries with large hourly workforces, including:

  • retail businesses
  • restaurants and hospitality companies
  • franchise operators
  • small and mid-size service businesses

Employers can offer the preventive care program as a supplemental employee benefit designed to support workforce health while controlling benefit costs.

Alternative Employee Benefits Emerging

As healthcare costs continue to rise, many employers are exploring alternative benefits that focus on wellness and preventive care rather than comprehensive insurance coverage.

Benefits consultants say preventive care programs are gaining attention as businesses look for ways to provide health-related benefits while maintaining financial flexibility.

For employees, access to preventive healthcare services can mean earlier diagnosis of potential health problems and improved long-term health outcomes.

For employers, healthier workers can translate into fewer sick days and improved productivity.

Filling A Coverage Gap

Millions of American workers remain uninsured or underinsured, particularly in industries with hourly or part-time employment structures.

Programs focused on preventive healthcare are emerging as one approach to help close that gap while keeping employer costs manageable.

As cannabis retailers and other service-sector businesses continue to grow, employee benefits are expected to play an increasingly important role in attracting and retaining workers.

Preventive healthcare programs may offer one path for businesses seeking to improve workforce stability while supporting employee wellness.
