FLINT – Genesee County students who commit to an additional year of high school can earn substantial college credit – up to 60 credit hours and even an associate degree – at no cost at Baker College in Flint. Programs available are computer programming, business administration, photonics and laser technology, automotive services technology, computer numerical controls machinist and criminal justice.

Oct. 5 is the deadline for high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors to enroll in early/middle college for the 2016-17 academic year. The program is offered through Carman Park Career Academy. An open house on Sept. 20 at 1116 W. Bristol Road, Flint, from 5:30 to 7 pm will help parents, and the general public understand the program. Reservations are not necessary.

At the open house, attendees will learn about the two Academy options and tour the new location, an existing 9,850-square-foot building on the Flint campus that has been renovated. The Academy had been located in the former Carman Park Elementary School building, adjacent to Baker College, where it was known as Carman Park-Baker Career Academy.

“You can’t get better than free,” said Chris Christensen, principal of Carman-Ainsworth Baker Career Academy. “If students complete an associate degree, they have more choices at graduation – begin work in their career field, continue their education to earn a bachelor’s or both – and they save thousands of dollars. The open house is also the perfect opportunity to view our new facility and meet our staff and instructors.”

The Academy is the result of a 10-year partnership between Baker College of Flint and Carman-Ainsworth. The school district subsidizes tuition and other costs for students to earn college credit though dual enrollment and early/middle college options.

The Academy was recently sanctioned as an early/middle college by the State of Michigan. Now students who commit to an additional year of high school can earn substantial college credit – up to 60 credit hours and even an associate degree – at no cost. Programs available are computer programming, business administration, photonics and laser technology, automotive services technology, computer numerical controls (CNC) machinist and criminal justice.
