LANSING – Michigan is offering scholarships to students that attend a select list of Michigan universities to study electrical engineering and software developers.

Ava Attari, MEDC’s Director of Higher Education Partnerships, provides details on the Michigander Scholars program and the STEAM Ahead internship program – a 1:1 wage match to employers hiring.

The Michigander Scholars program was expanded to include higher education partners Kettering University in Flint and Wayne State University in Detroit, as well as adding several new employers, including Hemlock Semiconductor, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota.

Those companies join existing employer partners participating in the program such as General Motors, Ford, BorgWarner, LG Energy Solutions and SK Siltron CSS, while Kettering and Wayne State join the MEDC’s existing higher ed partnerships with the Michigan State University, Michigan Technological University, and the University of Michigan campuses in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint.

In addition, the MEDC has expanded The Michigander Scholars program to allow sophomores and graduate students to be eligible for scholarships and added computer and process engineers as career roles. STEAM Ahead is a statewide program that aims to foster meaningful, hands-on career experiences for students interested in STEAM-related positions and to support companies of all sizes with building a strong tech talent pipeline for key focus areas through the next decade: EV & Mobility Semiconductor Life Sciences & Medical Device Clean Energy Defense & Aerospace Advanced Manufacturing.
