SOUTHFIELD – Ascension Health, the nation’s largest chain of Catholic hospitals, said it was responding to a cyberattack that was disrupting its operations. Cybersecurity experts Dan Lohrmann from Presidio and Richard Stiennon from IT-Harvest break down the attack, which also has impacted the nursing program at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield.

In a press release on its website, Ascension said the attack had caused “disruption to clinical operations” as access to some systems had been interrupted. Lohrmann and Stiennon said Ascension hospitals are back to issuing orders in writing.

How could this level of cyber attack succeed? Lohrmann and Stiennon said the attack most likely came through remote access to the Ascension network and serves as a warning that in this era of hospital mergers it could happen again.
