Planning To Fly On Or After May 7? You Need A Real ID To Get Past Security

DETROIT – If you plan to fly within the United States on or after May 7, you need a “Real ID” at the airport to get on a domestic flight, if you don’t have your passport.

May 7 is when enforcement begins. Everyone will need to have a star on their driver’s license to fly within the United States or enter certain federal buildings.

A passport will suffice for flying, and other forms of ID are accepted.

But if your driver’s license doesn’t have a star in the top right corner, it’s not Real ID compliant and won’t get you through the TSA checkpoint.

There’s no extra charge if you switch when renewing your license, but if you decide to do it at a different time, then you will have to pay a fee.

Here’s what the TSA wants everyone to know.

“What’s important to be aware of is that travelers traveling without a Real ID-compliant ID or another acceptable form of identification should be prepared to experience some delay at the TSA security checkpoints that will potentially impact their travel. Bottom line is that it’s best to get your Real ID sooner rather than later so you don’t risk missing your flight.”

Lisa Farbstein Spokesperson at Transportation Security Administration

The TSA also says they realize not everyone will have gotten the message, which could result in angry travelers and long lines.
