ANN ARBOR – Eight students from Washtenaw Community College have been invited to participate in the first Midwest regional cyber defense competition at the University of Illinois, Urbana, on March 24.
The Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition provides colleges and universities with information assurance or computer security curricula with a controlled competitive environment to measure their students’ depth of understanding and operational competency in protecting computer networks.
The teams of students from eight colleges and universities will be competing at the Midwest regional event. The winning team will have the opportunity to advance to a national finals competition to be hosted by the University of Texas in April.
During the competition, each team of students will be responsible for evaluating, managing, securing and adding services to an actual network of computer systems for a hypothetical multinational manufacturing company.
An additional team composed of impartial security professionals will attempt to disrupt business operations and gain access to critical systems and services on the network. The students must anticipate system attacks and implement appropriate security countermeasures in real time. The competition is designed as a rigorous test of students? alertness, resourcefulness, and skills as they react to changing conditions.
