LANSING – The Department of Technology, Management and Budget will travel the remaining road of the Granholm administration with an interim director at the reins, as Director Ken Theis announced Thursday he was leaving the post effective October 1.
Theis, who oversaw the combination of the departments of Information Technology and Management and Budget, has taken a post in the private sector. Spokesperson Kurt Weiss said the company and the post could not be announced until October 1 under an agreement with the company, but he said it was a position in the Lansing area.
“Ken Theis led the state to the number one ranking in digital government, and he has been instrumental in our technology success stories,” Gov. Jennifer Granholm said on the announcement of his leaving the administration. “I thank him for his dedicated service to the citizens of Michigan and for everything he has done to help us streamline government and make it more user friendly as well as transparent for citizens. The impact of his work will be felt for years to come and we wish him nothing but continued success.”
Phyllis Mellon, who served as DMB interim director after the departure of Director Lisa Webb Sharp until DTMB officially came to be, will serve again as interim director. Weiss said he expected Mellon would hold that post through the end of the year, as he was not aware of any efforts to try to find a replacement for Theis.
“Phyllis Mellon is an experienced and talented public servant with a proven track record of leadership in our administration,” Granholm said. “Her depth of knowledge and history with the department as well as her vast experience in state government will ensure a seamless and smooth transition.”
